Severe Delays in Australian Customs Clearance

New Computer System Responsible for Major Shipping Backlog

October 25, 2005 – Australia’s port system has practically ground to a halt as customs clearance of all shipments has been severely delayed.   Their new cargo management system, Integrated Cargo System (ICS), has been blamed for the current backlog of all shipments, including commodities, commercial goods and household goods.  Thousands of air and sea shipments have been left in limbo as officials work to resolve problems with the new system.

The Australian International Movers Association (AIMA) recently released a statement regarding problems with the new system.  They have reported that:

“The systems for both import and export were not properly tested and in many ways were incomplete as constant changes were being introduced and forced upon industry right up to the implementation date of 12 October 2005.”

Once the ICS system problems have been resolved and customs clearance has resumed, shipments still will be subject to delays as they are processed and cleared through the port system.

Port storage and demurrage charges will be incurred for all shipments arriving in Australia after October 12, 2005.  The average cost per shipment is $100 per day.
